EduBoost Slack Tips

If you're new to Slack, here are some tips to get you started coaching with us on EduBoost (Slack)...

Tip #1: Add a space in your post

When you hit "enter" or "return" on a computer, your message sends...even if you were just trying to start a new paragraph or add space between ideas.

Here’s how to do that without sending your message before you're ready:

  • Hold down the "Shift" button (the "Control" button also works on a Mac).

  • Then, hit enter to start a new line.

Tip #2: Organize the space

  1. Star our coaching DM thread a star to move it higher up in the sidebar under “Starred.”     To do this:

    • Right click on the conversation in the left hand sidebar.

    • Select “Star Conversation”.

  2. To hide the list of people under Direct Messages:

    • Click the “Direct messages” category in your left sidebar

    • Click “Show and Sort”

    • Click “Unreads Only”

Tip #3: Leave an audio clip if it’s easier than typing!

  • Open a message. In the app version,  click the + sign.

  • Select the microphone.  (It says “Record an Audio Clip”.)

  • Start talking, and click the white and blue check mark when finished.

  • Click the send button. (It’s the white and green paper airplane icon.)

Tip #4: Pause your notifications when you’re not in planning mode.

  • Click your profile picture in the sidebar.

  • Hover over Pause notifications.

  • Choose a time frame from the menu, or select Custom to set your own. (You can also select “Set a notification schedule” to choose a regular set of hours you would like to receive notifications. For example: Weekdays only from 3PM to 7PM.)

Tip #5: Find previous messages using Slack’s extensive search filters.

On a computer:

  • Click the search field at the top of Slack.

  • Type what you’re looking for into the search field. To narrow your results, add modifiers to your search.

  • Select an option from the list, or press Enter to view all results. Click “Filters” to refine your search results further.

On a phone:

  • Tap the Search bar at the top of your screen.

  • Tap the search field and type what you’re looking for. To narrow your results, add modifiers to your search.

  • Tap Search or the magnifying glass in the list of suggested results. Tap “More filters” to further refine your results.

To see the full range of filters/modifiers, check out the list on this help guide. Searching for former messages is great if a coach or member of the community shared a resource, and you remember it exists, but don’t remember exactly where it’s posted.
